Rodos Holidays (Part 1: Monuments)
RODOS holidays will be my first report on my new and kickin' blog.
Rodos, for those who don't know, is an island in the NE part of Greece bording with Turkey. It is one of the biggest islands in Greece, certainly smaller than Crete, but still big.
I was in Rodos this summer for four days (6-7-8-9 of August). It was my first time on the island and I was really amazed.
The island attracts a big number of tourists. That is mainly because of its natural beauty and a big number of different cultures that co-exist harmonically on the island. To name a few (apart from the obvious Greek one): Roman, Ottoman, Islamic. Its main attraction is the big castles with their big walls that surround the 'old town' of Rodos. Above you can take a look at the 'big' castle found in the end of the 'walk of the knights'.
Beside you can see the main entrance to the 'old city'. There are more entrace next to the main one, but believe me when crossing this one feels like passing through the medieval times.
On the left, you can see the most common mixture of a greek and ottoman church confessing the wide influence of Turks to all of the Dodekanese (complex of islands including Rodos) islands. The church is something like a little less glorious example of the 'Hagia Sofia' in Instanbul, one of the greatest examples of such mixture.
The town has a perfect feeling during both day and night. People come and go paying a visit to the monuments (for a full listing, opening times and admissions check islands's website), shops and of course until-next-morning entertainment. The city looks glorious at night and it's definately worth the visit.
Finally, there are numerous other places that deserve the visitor's attention. Some of them include the ancient city of 'Lindos', the '7 Waterfalls' and the 'Butterfly Forest'. All unique, all superb. At the end of the day don't forget to visit 'Faliraki' and 'Lindos' both famous for the fun and the deluge of people at night.
